UNEP refreshes The Business Case for Knowing Chemicals in Products & Supply Chains

The United Nations Environment Programme recently refreshed the report, originally released in 2014, with new design elements and translations in Chinese, French, and Spanish. Written by our very own Dr. Mark Rossi, the report highlights how “Regulatory requirements, customer demands, media attention, non-governmental organization advocacy, product recalls, and market opportunities are driving companies to know more about the chemicals in their products and supply chains.”

"BPA Is Still Found in Food Can Linings" webinar

A new report "Buyer Beware: Toxic BPA and Regrettable Substitutions Found in the Linings of Canned Food" found 67% of nearly 200 food can linings from dozens of brands and retailers tested positive for the toxic chemical Bisphenol A (BPA).

The one hour webinar featured presentations from the report's co-authors and Q&A with members of the audience. Listen to learn more about the test results, how companies responded, and next steps to move the food can sector to safer substitutes.

Walmart reduces its chemical footprint

Walmart reports reducing its chemical footprint for 10 chemicals of high concern by 95%. This is part of Walmart implementing its comprehensive chemicals management program as highlighted in the company’s Global Responsibility Report:

“Understanding a business chemical footprint is an evolving area and involves many factors, not the least of which is the need to protect suppliers’ proprietary information. Through close collaboration with Environmental Defense Fund, we have an initial framework for evaluating our chemical footprint using UL’s WERCSmart™ platform for inscope formulated consumable products. We started with quantitative indicators because we believe that, over time, they will adequately inform us about our policy’s effectiveness in achieving our goals of increasing ingredient transparency and advancing the safer formulations of products” (p. 105).

GreenScreen® Assessment of Galaxolide

Women’s Voices for the Earth commissioned a GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals assessment of Galaxolide, a common fragrance chemical used in cleaning products, to determine its hazard level. The results of the GreenScreen chemical assessment revealed that Galaxolide received a Benchmark-1 score due to its high persistent, bioaccumulative and aquatic toxicity properties.
