Updates from GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals

6/2/2016 Clean Production Action Blogs Bulletins

Clean Production Action began 2016 with a record number of training courses and events. Thank you to everyone who attended a course or supported us in getting the word out! It is you who create the value of GreenScreen by using it to design and select chemicals, materials, and products.
Online Introduction to GreenScreen course is live!

We are thrilled to announce the release of our online GreenScreen Introductory Course. This is our first online training offering, developed to meet the increasing global demand for GreenScreen. We are happy to expand our reach and make this information accessible, convenient, and engaging.

Learn how companies like HP Inc., certification systems such as US Green Building Council’s LEED Standard, and government organizations such as Washington State use GreenScreen to innovate towards safer chemicals and create market efficiency in global supply chains. The online course can be taken from anywhere at your own pace, and includes six modules ranging from an overview of chemical hazard assessment to using GreenScreen to select safer chemicals and products. This course is ideal for professionals and organizations that seek tangible ways to help companies make safer products and share chemical hazard information while protecting proprietary knowledge. For a limited time, students who preview the first module can receive the complete course for FREE.
2016 GreenScreen Advanced Training programs kick off

We kicked off our 2016 Advanced Training programs in May with a diverse and talented group of students from industry, government, and NGOs participating in the Advanced Topics Course and Practitioner Program. These programs are offered once a year, and class size is limited to maintain personalized and high quality instruction. The Advanced Topics Course provides in-depth training on GreenScreen and students are engaged through live webinars. Practitioner students will also complete a Practicum in which they assess two chemicals with expert coaching and feedback. Those who successfully complete both the Advanced Topics Course and the Practicum become Authorized GreenScreen Practitioners. The Practitioner Program offers technical professionals – product designers, engineers, toxicologists, environmental health and safety experts, chemists, etc. – a unique opportunity to strengthen their professional portfolio while simultaneously helping their companies lead the way through product design that is safer for humans and the environment. We look forward to working with this dynamic group to provide deep training on the GreenScreen method.
CPA was in Sacramento to train on GreenScreen

In April, Clean Production Action teamed with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to deliver an in-person “Introduction to GreenScreen” course to a full house of participants. This experiential workshop explored the value and uses of the GreenScreen hazard assessment, with a special focus on supporting alternatives analysis work required under the California Safer Consumer Products regulation. Workshop attendees included DTSC staff, government organizations, academia, NGOs and industry. In addition to working through exercises to “get their feet wet” using GreenScreen to classify hazards and derive Benchmark scores, students engaged in lively discussions on how hazard assessment fits into complementary decision-making frameworks including risk and alternatives assessment.
From the participants:

"Excellent overview of the tool and process" - Travis Willard, Ascend Performance Materials

"The training was well delivered to give the future users a scientifically defensible tool to apply precautionary principles to screening for safer alternatives" - Xiaoying Zhou, California DTSC
CPA gratefully acknowledges joint funding of the workshop and online course by DTSC and a US Environmental Protection Agency Pollution Prevention grant.
